300,000+ domains on HTTPS. Certificates renew themselves. Bots stop at the edge.
The team behind ExpiredDomains.com moved its domain redirects from its own servers to RedirHub. Certificates renew themselves, bots are stopped at the edge, and the work that needed daily attention is gone.

A catalogue that keeps growing
Domain Science runs ExpiredDomains.com, the research workspace for expired, auction and aftermarket domains. Many of the domains it holds still get visits from old links and search results, and each one needs to send those visitors somewhere useful, over HTTPS.
What running it in-house really cost
For years the team ran those redirects on its own servers. Handling that volume took powerful, expensive hardware, but the hardware was not the hard part. The real burden was certificates: issuing and renewing them at this scale. Without a robust system errors slip through, and a domain that is down for days before anyone notices was by far the most costly problem.
On top of that, the setup needed constant human attention. Sudden traffic spikes and domains drawing extreme bot traffic all had to be handled by hand.
Redirecting domain names with SSL is a huge pain, and I have to do it frequently, often at mass. Now it is a few clicks. It just works.
Zsolt BikadiCSO, Domain ScienceCertificates that renew themselves
With RedirHub, a domain gets its certificate as soon as its DNS points to us, and every certificate is renewed automatically before it expires. More than 300,000 domains are live on HTTPS today, and around 30,000 new ones join each month without anyone issuing or renewing a certificate by hand.
Most of the traffic was never people
Expired domains attract scanners, crawlers and scripts probing for old admin pages. Before filtering, the domains received roughly ten times the requests they get today. RedirHub now reads the request stream as it arrives and stops a source once it behaves like a bot. Three kinds of behaviour give it away:
What it looks like now
This part of Domain Science's operation is now close to effortless. Every month more than 6 billion requests pass the filter and are redirected to where they should go.
